These Cars Run... but they can't hide
Luckily for art car owners, they prefer their cars be seen during their excursion across Nebraska on Route 6
By AMY SCHWEITZER, Hub Staff Writer
MINDEN — Many who travel along Nebraska Highway 6 may be doing a double take when they see some of the cars sharing the road with them starting Sunday.
The Route 6 Nebraska Art Car Tour will travel from Gretna to Imperial, passing through the Hub Territory towns of Minden and Holdrege Aug. 18 and 19.
An art car is a street-legal, modified car, said Don Robinson of Hastings, event coordinator for the tour.
“It could be anything from a wild paint job to pieces welded on to the car,” he said, adding that he expects some cars that are only temporary art cars.
On the tour will be at least 10 national art cars, including the BugWing, a combination of a Goldwing motorcycle and a Volkswagen Beetle, and Robinson’s own car, which has a map of Nebraska painted on it with the route of Highway 6 highlighted.
He said he has always driven “oddly-decorated cars,” and one day someone complimented him on his “art car.” That’s how he first learned of national shows that bring in hundreds of these cars.
Robinson said there will be exhibition-type events in nearly every town in which the tour plans a stop. For example, the tour will stop in Minden to talk about art at the school during the students’ lunchtime. Also, two women from Minnesota will be performing “speed painting” in the bed of a pickup. Robinson said they create two 6-foot by 6-foot paintings in two minutes.
The tour will be staying overnight Aug. 18 at the Pioneer Village motel and will have a show there.
The Route 6 Nebraska group was organized to promote the small towns and interesting sights along the highway, Robinson said.
“This tour is another vehicle for driving people to the Web site and to show what all Highway 6 has to offer,” he said.
